Students should read any three books - listed specifically by title or by recommended authors.  If your child is not able to read yet, please read with him/ her.  Choose one of the books to complete the Riddle Project; one will be used to create a Book Award Ribbon, and the third for My First Book Report.

Students are to read 5 out of the 15 titles.  Please read with your child, if necessary.  Have your child draw a picture of his/her favorite story from the list.  Pictures are to be drawn on a large paper bag.  Include on this, the title and author of the book.  After the children have reported on their stories, they may cover their reading books with their drawings.

For each of your two Summer Reading books, copy (in blue or black ink) the bold words and fill in this outline with information from each book.  Outlines must be handwritten on white lined paper with the proper heading at the top.  Information should be in phrases, not sentences.  Please do not use report covers.  Clip this form to your reports.  Grades include grammar and spelling.

BOOK REPORT FORMAT

 Choose one of these formats for each of your two Summer Reading books.  You may use a different format for each book or the same format for both books.  Each report should be 4 pages handwritten in ink on white lined paper with the proper heading at the top.    Write the title, author, publisher, and number of pages after the heading.  

1.        Diary – Write a diary as a main character during the book’s events.  Include some of the

dialogue and details from the book, and cite the page numbers of these details in parentheses.

 

2.        News – Write the plot of the story as if it were on the evening news.  Include details from the story and cite the page numbers.   This should "sound" exciting; include "quotes" from "eyewitnesses "to the events in your news report.

 

3.        Sequel – Briefly summarize (1/2 page) the plot and write a sequel (3 ½ pages). 

The sequel may be in play, diary, poem, or prose form.

 

4.        Test – List 15 vocabulary words with their definitions and quotations from the book

            cite page numbers).  Find examples of 10 different Literary Terms; quote each

example and cite its page number.
